Shine ZC – Derby
Award-winning SHINE-ZC, is a zero-carbon housing scheme located on Woods Lane, Derby. The Sustainable Housing Innovation Network of Excellence – Zero Carbon (SHINE-ZC) development in Derby is a compact urban housing scheme designed by Simon Foote Architects and EMRE Ltd, in partnership with Loughborough University’s renowned Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology (CREST).
The development of nine dwellings, comprising six terraced homes and three apartments, was designed to be the UK’s first demonstration of zero-carbon, low-energy, affordable housing in a compact regenerated brownfield setting.
Ground-breaking features of the project include:
- A bespoke thermal store basement, consisting of rubble from the building that stood on the site before, which is the first of its kind
- ICF (insulated concrete framework) brickwork
- A facility to collect more than 9,000 litres of waste water for re-use
- Electricity generated from cooking oil and solar panels
This state-of-the-art development also includes an integrated building management system. It will take readings from 500 sensors located throughout the building over a two year period, providing data on carbon dioxide, humidity and temperature levels, water and general energy usage to determine the efficiency of all this new technology.
