Electric Daisy – Derby
Simon Foote Architects proudly collaborated with Down to Earth Derby, a visionary community-driven enterprise partnered with the renowned Eden Project, to realize their debut scheme, Electric Daisy. The project was to revamp a derelict site at Bold Lane that is owned by Derby City Council. Formerly the site of a supermarket, which was demolished more than a decade ago, the location had obtained planning permission for a new office development. The advent of the Pandemic removed the necessity for additional office spaces in this location, so when Down to Earth Derby was formed, this site became a prime opportunity. Down to Earth is a newly founded organisation reinventing the way we use and think about our cities, by bringing life back to vacant spaces and educating communities towards a brighter and sustainable future, which is something we can all, and need, to get behind.
The initial concept of transforming this disused parcel into a community-centric garden was undeniably inspiring and immediately captured our imagination. Central to the design is an allotment-style garden, complemented by a dynamic central area tailored for al fresco events, educational initiatives, and convivial gatherings. Fostering connectivity among individuals remained a steadfast principle throughout the project’s evolution.
Reconnecting the community with nature is what Down to Earth stands for, with the formation of social green spaces within inner city locations being a crucial part of their plan moving forwards. The site’s opening in June 2023 was a huge success, with around 1000 people turning up over the weekend, gathering to socialise and enjoy the food and entertainment on offer. The project sets an example for a new way of thinking by adapting empty and derelict spaces, whilst providing a sense of place and happiness, in the city centre.
