Can we retrofit buildings and/or change their use? needs to be the first question asked when assessing an existing site. The changes we all face through the climate and the energy consumed and used during manufacturing need to be managed and reduced to a minimum.
‘The built environment, of which the construction sector is a crucial component, currently contributes some 40% of the UK’s carbon emissions and it is estimated that the construction sector contributes up to 11% of global carbon emissions.’ ; Royal Academy of Engineering 2021
Simon Foote Architects where enlisted to redevelop this 1970’s former office building, which had been left empty for several years, into 11 apartments.. Although the building looked a little tired, its concrete frame structure was still in good order so there was a clear opportunity to investigate completely rejuvenate the property externally.
Cladding over the concrete frame rather than refurbishing within it, was the key. This allowed us to insulate the outside and then clad over the insulation, creating and very thermally efficient and airtight external fabric. The existing large opening where also partially covered using specialist coloured cladding panels which also really transformed the properties appearance.
This innovative approach to property redevelopment gives outdated buildings a sustainable use for the future in a visually appealing and cost-effective way. The building has become a bit of a landmark due to its use of colour.
