Located within Derby’s Friar Gate conservation area, Simon Foote Architects where appointed to redevelopment this site from its current retail use into luxury student accommodation. The site is constrained by neighbouring residential properties which created the opportunity to design a scheme that prioritises privacy whilst enhancing the overall setting. The resulting scheme uses a concertinaed elevation, to the rear blocks, which creates a dynamic appearance and a social central landscaped area. The front block uses the existing massing within the street scene and then twists the main elevation to allow the form to be read in between both neighbouring buildings (these have differing physical relationships with the street frontage). The approved scheme accommodates 39 luxury 35m2 student bed/ study spaces with private gardens, entertainment rooms and a concierge.
