Simon Foote Architects was commissioned to design a contemporary extension to a Grade II listed building, within the curtilage of Allestree Park, located on the outskirts of Derby.
The scheme, granted at planning appeal, comprises of a glass and cedar clad extension, incorporating air-source heating and is ‘super-insulated’ to allow for the large open aspect areas of glazing; making the most of the views across the garden to mature woodland surrounding the property.
The design sets a precedent for contemporary additions to historically important listed buildings which emphasise the original property’s appearance and form. The original lodge has been restored and retains its intimate, private feel whilst the new part of the house provides modern, open plan living, kitchen, dining and entertainment areas. The project won a RIBA East Midlands Award in 2014.
