S House, Darley Abbey, Derby

A young family wanted to extend and alter their home, to create their ‘forever’ home, located in the idyllic Darley Abbey village. The detached property is situated in a much sought after corner plot, just a stone’s throw from Darley Park.

The couple had previously gained planning permission for an extension but had since seen work that the practice had previously designed. They liked the openness and light space that had been achieved, which their design did not fulfil. With that in mind the team set about creating a contemporary design that would provide them with the desired space.

An open plan kitchen/dining space with separate utility, boot room, and w/c was top of the priority list for the ground floor. The client also wanted to create a welcoming and open entrance hall achieved through the use of a crittall style glazed wall. They really needed to increase the number of bedrooms to 4, with two ensuite bathrooms. By replacing the existing hipped roof structure with a gable roof this allowed us to extend into the loft to create the additional rooms. The key to ensuring a pleasing aesthetic externally was to reflect the existing house proportionally and allow the addition to ‘talk’ to the existing without copying it.
